The Decision

The original decision to resign my position as Vice President, Purchasing, of Winston Furniture Company, a company I had been with about 10 years and which had over 600 employees, was not a spontaneous idea.  For many years I had dreamed of living somewhere in South America. In 1984, my wife and I enjoyed a two week vacation all over Brazil and decided we would like to live there.  Upon returning to the states, we took a day off and went to the Brazilian Consulate in New Orleans, where we were essentially told that Brazil don't want Americans moving there unless we have lots of money.   So we ended up moving to Paraguay where there were almost no requirements at all.

The ultimate reason why I decided to make such a drastic move was partially because I just couldn't see spending the rest of my life sitting there in my office and staring at four walls every day, and concluded that "there simply must be more to life than this."  So I turned in my resignation from that six-figure income in May of 1986 and we moved to Paraguay on June 10, 1986.  I am private pilot and sold my Cessna 210 airplane, sold my home, cars, and everything, and went to Paraguay where we did not know anyone, could not speak the language, had no idea what we were going to do for income, the country was a poor third world country, and of top of that it was ran by the military dictator Alfredo Stroessner.     I wanted to see if I could become successful against all those odds plus not having a college education, with all those things essentially against me.  To make a long story short, we started our own small fast food business, and in less than five years we had more income than I was making in the states, incredibly!
